Teaching Methods and Learning Activities

#
As part of their e-learning process students need to complete ten lessons in each academic ‘class’ or five lessons as part of their professional and personal development course.

The lessons are designed to take about 3 ½ hours, plus on average 1 ½ hours for the additional reading materials, but students can take as long as they like. It will pretty much depend on any other commitments. Most of our students study and work at the same time, so they can only study for one hour per evening, twice or three times a week. We advise students take a maximum of 4 lessons per week.

Students have to read the lesson and the additional reading materials such as glossary and biographies. Each lesson has a series of trivia questions: short pieces of text with interesting information. Then students will need to learn some things by heart and make notes of other things, and of course, there’s the end of lesson mock exam and the final End of Lesson Quiz to do after EACH lesson.

The student progresses throughout the lesson engaging in a series of interactive and interesting activities. There is an end of lesson “mock assessment” where students will have the opportunity to practise questions and see what is expected of them in the End of Lesson Quiz.

Course Mentors
Each course has a tutor and a course administrator, who students can turn to with questions. The “student mentor” is like a ghost who traces student movement in the Virtual Classroom. Mentors can see how often students logged in, what they did in the Virtual Classroom, and what their quiz grades are. In the ‘real’ world mentors are lovely people who are qualified lecturers (even the course administrator will be a lecturer at a traditional university) so students can rely on their knowledge and advice. Rest assured that you are in good hands.

Assessment
In order to successfully pass the module, the student must complete all 10 lessons, or 5 lessons on the Professional and Personal Development courses, and pass all End of Lesson Quizzes.
Each academic module will be assessed externally, to uphold the high academic standards AIBS Online strives for. Professional courses’ final grade will be made up of the 5 individual End of Lesson Quizzes.

Online Learning Platform
AIBS Online uses Moodle, the virtual learning technology, to teach students and allow for online interaction between users. Moodle is virtual software where course materials are uploaded and various interactive activities are enabled.

Virtual Classroom

The Virtual Classroom is a place where students will find materials for their course. Each course has a different classroom, a different web address (virtual home) where the specific materials live. Students get the key to that classroom when they enrol. Once in the classroom students can:

1. see who else is online at the same time
2. look at the notice board for any new announcements
3. read the latest course news
4. search forums for information
5. create a personal blog
6. view other users’ blog entries
7. view and add to the course calendar
8. read the lesson materials
9. read the additional materials
10. take the mock exam
11. contact the course administrator

Student Lounge
In Moodle students have a designated space, Student Lounge, where they can communicate with other students and teachers and read general information about their courses. Students can write a blog and share it with others, participate in discussions through forums and chat instantaneously with online users. There are many outside links and RSS feeds to make the Student Lounge as interesting and relaxing as possible.
