Professional Development Course
This course provides an introduction to probability, statistical inference and
statistical analysis using Excel and Minitab. Topics include the elements of
exploratory data analysis, basic measures of central tendency and variability,
graphical displays, sampling distribution theory, the normal and
t-distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, linear regression,
elementary probability, goodness-of-fit, and time series analysis. The class is
designed to teach the student the basic concepts and mechanics of utilizing
statistical methods to analyse business data. Attention is focused on
interpreting in a clear and definitive manner the results of this statistical
analysis for the support of business decision making. The goal of the course is
to provide a comprehensive introduction of essential concepts in probability and
statistics, and for students to gain proficiency in applying these concepts to
data analysis. Statistics is not just numbers, but includes more generally
problem solving and logic. Description

Structure
Each course consists of 5 study units which are designed to contain a
minimum of 3 ½ hours of content each and to be taken once a week resulting in
approximately 18
“in the electronic classroom” hours. This schedule may be accelerated if you
achieve specified academic standards and the course tutor gives permission. You
only progress from one lesson to the next when you’ve completed the previous
one. It’s a tried-and-tested learning method that means you’ll always be
confident about what you learn.
Assessment
Each study unit is assessed on-line and if the course is taken for
university level credit AIBS Online requires students to complete a final comprehensive
written examination, which is conducted externally.
